“If gambling was actually a drug, I would have overdosed and died by now.” This
is what was told to me by one of my clients who really struggles with an addiction
to gambling. Most people don’t realize how addictive gambling can become.
The National Council on Problem Gambling recognizes March as problem
gambling awareness month. Every story matters. I have heard a lot of stories. The
person who has lost everything and comes to me in debt, unable to pay their bills,
considering ending their life. The person who has a trial coming up because they
“borrowed” money from their boss, didn’t ask, intending to pay back when they
won but now facing embezzlement charges. The spouse ready to leave the
gambler because they can no longer trust them because they have gone behind
their back and gambled all the household savings away.
Anyone who gambles can be at risk for developing a gambling addiction.
Especially now that it is so widespread in our area. Casinos, lottery, scratch
tickets, sports betting -even grocery stores and gas stations have “games of skill”
machines. On line gambling has exploded and commercials promise you
promotions and free play-tempting you to play.
The National Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-GAMBLER) is available via call,
text or chat and can provide detailed information regarding treatment resources
in your area.
