VRS is a free, 24/7 service which guarantees citizens who are deaf (or hard-of-hearing) and use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate, access to prompt, professional and accurate communication through a certified ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter via a high-speed internet connection and a video relay solution (or VRS call option).
VRS is provided through various companies around the U.S who employ trained communications assistants (CA), also known as interpreters, who follow a strict code of ethics and confidentiality.
Use VRS to INITIATE a call
- Dial the person’s phone number using a standard phone.
- The VRS interpreter will answer and automatically connect you to the person you wish to contact.
- You may provide the interpreter with any special instructions, if desired.
- All messages are relayed by the interpreter, using ASL or spoken English or Spanish. The person you are calling may also be made aware of any audible background noises or conversations occurring near you.
- You may experience a little bit of quiet time while the interpreter is translating.
- The conversation can proceed normally.
Use VRS to RECEIVE a call
- Your phone rings and you answer it.
- You hear the interpreter say “Hello, this is VRS communication assistant #1234 with a VRS call for this number.”
- DON’T HANG UP. You realize this is a call from a person who uses American Sign Language.
- You accept the call.
- When the conversation is over someone says “goodbye” or “signing off” and both disconnect the call.
